We went to see Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan on Saturday.  For anyone thinking about going to see it, I’ll say this: you will either love it or hate it.  It’s not one of those movies that leaves much for middle ground.  In general, if someone were to ask me whether or not I’d recommend it, I’d say no.  I say that because I’d rather err on the side of caution.  Some people I know would love it.  I enjoyed it.  It’s crude.  It’s raunchy.  It’s intended for a very specific kind of audience, and I guess one that I’m in, but that particular audience I suspect is a very small part of the population.  So, tread with caution on this one.

I saw this posted somewhere and thought it quite accurate. Anyone that’s actually used a decent man page knows my pain when dealing with Linux man pages.

I found a link to this article a few days back discussing education vs median income rates for the USA.  It’s quite interesting.  I’m particularly horrified at how low median income levels are everywhere, but it’s feels funny to move from Oklahoma to Tennessee and see that the rate right next to eachother.

Yet more humor (true story)…

This morning (a Saturday) I woke up and glanced at the time.  It was 9am.  My brain decides that it’s Tuesday and starts its normal accounting of what is on the schedule.  A split second later I get the rush of adrenaline as I come to the realization that I have 1 hour to type a two page introductory paragraph for my English class and get to my professor’s office across campus.  I spring up and start to climb down from the bed, hop down to the floor and start running down to the bathroom.  Halfway there I realize that I have an exam at 12:30 and haven’t studied much for it yet.  I get another boost of adrenaline and my brain goes into overdrive.  I’m starting to do the composition now, so that when I get to one of the computer labs I can just dump everything out, “finalize”, and print.  I get to the bathroom.  I’m standing there doing my business and it hits me — it’s Saturday.

So, I go back to bed.  I haven’t done something like that in a long time, but I sure had some excitement for a few minutes.

I was reading an article in Physics Today (January 2006 issue) today and this article “On Absolute Units, II: Challenges and Responses” by Frank Wilczek. It caught my eye. Anyway, there was a joke in there that was pretty good. I’ll copy it here.

As a reward for his integrity and devotion to truth, [Wolfgang] Pauli is granted an interview with God. Pauli takes the opportunity to ask God to explain why the fine-structure constant has the value it does, and God obliges. Pauli ponders what he’s been told for a moment, and then responds “Wrong!”

I saw this on one of the forums I read. Pretty funny to me, but of course I have a pretty dry sense of humor.

If you want those try something I did back in the late 80′s. Our RC airplane club used to meet one evening a month in a volunteer firehouse out in Va. Beach. Nice way to take care of club business and see friends. At the end of one meeting they asked if anyone had anything else to bring up. I raised my hand and said I did. They gave me the floor. I stood up on my chair and started yelling “MOVIE!” MOVIE!” at the top of my lungs. Then I thanked the club officers and sat down.
You could’a heard a pin drop. Thay all just sat there and gaped at me with their mouths open and no sound coming out. Many of the guys were retired pilots and WWII vets.
Then my buddy Jerry fell on the floor laughing. And between gasping for breath and laughing his ass off he kept saying “Oh you asshole! I don’t believe you!!!!!” “What an idiot!”.
That brought on even more WTF looks.
I finally had to tell them “What!?! You’ve never had an urge to yell ‘movie’ in a crowded firehouse?”
You want funny looks? Just pull off a really bad pun.

I was searching MSNBC for an article about something I saw mentioned on the news (which I never found), but ran across this instead. I thought it was hilarious. How much you wanna bet somebody got fired over this one. At least it was a civilian that made the mistake.
