I headed out to work this morning and discovered my normal route blocked. Police cars had the entire intersection blocked just outside my apartment complex. It’s a pretty major intersection, so I assumed there must have been a big accident. I also noticed a couple of firefighters in full gear walking along the side of the road (but no trucks). Took it as odd, but not way out of place. We’ve seen some pretty bad intersections down Poplar. Anyway, turns out that there was a huge pair of fires here last night. When I say huge, I mean huge. Check out the links below. It was close — way too close. The first big fire was less than half a mile down the street. We pass that church all the time. It’s too bad that church was destroyed. It’s an amazing piece of history we’ve lost (it was built in 1893). I hope this doesn’t completely stop the redevelopment of the downtown area.
